"Kamal's Kes" by Baljinder Kaur is a recently published children's book filled with love, and warmth and seeks to empower our sisters and daughters to self-love and feel more body positive at times of doubt. Through a series of creative and engaging pictures, we follow Kamal's journey growing up and experiencing hair growth in all areas of her body. This causes her to feel unsettled and as she tries hard to ‘fit in’, Kamal is challenged by the typical beauty standards accepted in society, which leads to her questioning her appearance and subsequently, her individuality.
However, as the story unfolds, Kamal is met with her reflection which is blessed by the ‘whispering wisdom older than the sun’ and realises that her inner beauty is more than just looking in the mirror. Rather it is a feeling that liberates and allows one to accept themselves for who they are. Only then, does she embrace her body image and identity and combs her Kes with love.
This book is suitable for all ages, from parents who long to promote their daughters’ sense of self to teens learning to love the skin they’re in the quest to achieve self-acceptance. It is time we remind ourselves we are all beautiful.
So The question is… why fit in when you were born to stand out? Let’s follow Kamal’s footsteps and start combing our Kes with love.
