In an ever challenging world, the importance of empowering our next generation has never been more significant. There are many ways to empower our children and Sikh history is never short of moving stories of heroic and brave Sikhs. Singhs and Kaurs alike have been courageous and in high spirits for centuries.
One way we here at 'The Written Message' like to inspire the next generation is, of course, through literature. There are a vast range of motivational books available on our website and our pick for todays blog is the Saffron Press book collection.
Currently consisting of 4 books, the Saffron Press is a small independent Canadian publisher with the mission of "inspiring citizens of change." They aim to provide equal education and opportunities for all children. For over 2 years we have supported Safforn Press, through distributing their books to our audience in the United Kingdom.
Kamal's Kes
Our first book to introduce is "Kamal's Kes", a children's book filled with love, and warmth and seeks to empower our sisters and daughters to self-love and feel more body positive at times of doubt. Through a series of creative and engaging pictures, we follow Kamal's journey growing up and experiencing hair growth in all areas of her body. This causes her to feel unsettled and as she tries hard to ‘fit in’, Kamal is challenged by the typical beauty standards accepted in society, which leads to her questioning her appearance and subsequently, her individuality.
However, as the story unfolds, Kamal is met with her reflection which is blessed by the ‘whispering wisdom older than the sun’ and realises that her inner beauty is more than just looking in the mirror. Rather it is a feeling that liberates and allows one to accept themselves for who they are. Only then, does she embrace her body image and identity and combs her Kes with love.
A Lion's Mane
Next in the series is "A Lion's Mane", a children's story centered around a young Sikh boy, who explores what it means to be different. Each page asks a different question to encourage conversations about identity and belonging. This is particularly important as it can be easily relatable for young children who keep their hair and wear a dastar.
"A Lion's Mane" delves into the question "Do you know who I am?" through the metaphor of a lion's mane. The narrative’s rhythm flows alongside the vibrant, red fabric of a dastaar, strengthening the character’s identity with each new word stitched into the dastaar.
Dreams of Hope
The next book in this series in "Dreams of Hope", a bedtime lullaby perfect for young children. The story focusses on a father and daughter who embark on a journey to discover the essence of beauty of nature.
Ordinary Sunday afternoons transform into magical flights of butterflies, while delicate yet threatened Chiru find solace in their cozy Shahtooshi. As the father tucks his young one into bed, she is infused with a fresh appreciation and affection for the Earth and every living being, herself included. This timeless lullaby serves as a comforting addition, sparking hopeful dreams in the minds of children.
Garden of Peace
Our final book in this series is "Garden of Peace", a story of social change. In a time not so different from our own, five ugly and dried-up seeds were discovered. Elders and little ones alike wondered if anything could grow from such meager beginnings. Some threw the seeds aside, dismissing them as worthless, while others held onto hope.
This scenario is more than a simple tale about seeds; it’s an allegory deeply rooted in the social despair of a period marked by tyranny and an unfair social class system. It echoes a nation-building event in Sikh history that transformed despair into a harvest of change and hope.
In a society oppressed by a tyrant ruler, these seeds represented potential and resilience. This historical moment became a catalyst, inspiring citizens to rise and become agents of change. The story is a testament to the power of hope and collective action against social injustice.
This Own Voices narrative is a compelling call to action for anyone who cares about social justice. It challenges us to reflect on our roles and responsibilities in fostering change in our communities.
Have you ever wondered how to become a citizen of change? At the back of the book, you will find five steps to help you grow your own garden of peace. These steps are practical, actionable, and designed to inspire you to make a difference.
Join us in exploring this powerful story and learn how you, too, can plant the seeds of change in your own community.
